Water Treatment Plant – Malaysia

Water Treatment Plant - Malaysia

About

Drawing water from a river and a dam, this water treatment plant  located south of the capital Kuala Lumpur treats the water at its source. Once the water is safe, the plant delivers up to 304 MLD of water to a large urban and countryside area.

Challenge

The plant is located south of the capital Kuala Lumpur and is one of the largest water treatment plants in Malaysia.

The plant has implemented the TECTA™ B16 as part of an on-going effort to ensure the people of Malaysia have safe and pure drinking water. It is important for fast and accurate testing especially when there are sudden changes in the turbidity and physical appearance of incoming raw water that could indicate contamination.

Solution

To be certain that the water being supplied was clean, clear, and safe, the lab introduced the TECTA™ B16 to test for E. coli and Total Coliforms. The TECTA™ B16 can provide on the spot test results in 2-18 hours, depending on the level of contamination, much faster than traditional methods – without the need for a lab or a microbiologist.

The TECTA™ B16 was developed by TECTA-PDS to provide accurate and fully automated testing for E. coli and Total Coliforms. The TECTA™ B16 automatically transmits the data through a network connection allowing for immediate notification on electronic devices such as cell phone or laptops as soon as a contamination event is detected.

Success Story

It is important for the experts at the treatment plant to receive instantaneous notification of positive results as the plant’s Process & Lab Manager explains, “it indicates the possibility of the existence of the microbe and to relate the result to the surrounding activities that may contribute to the growth of the respective microbes.

Before implementing TECTA™ B16 the staff at the plant utilized the Qualitative ‘P/A’ method, where the samples must incubate for 24 before results can be observed. This requires significant dilutions for contaminated samples. The fully automated TECTA™ B16 saves considerable time and allows users to focus on other tasks.

The Process & Lab Manager is also looking at the possibility of being able to reduce the amount of testing that is done because, “this method is able to detect two types of microbes at one time in eight hours, this is much quicker than the traditional method and also means that the results are closer to real-time.”

The benefits of the completely automatic TECTA™ B16 include, being able to review data while the sample is running and also being able to start additional sample tests without interrupting the samples already running.
